Another small step-by-step tutorial. This one is on how to draw canyons for your fantasy map. Didn't plan to submit this here, but it seems people like these kind of tutorials, so I thought why not :P. I hope you enjoy! cheers

love these. i've always loved intricate details on maps, and now i know how to make them.

think you could do a tutorial on 3d cities? (modern/scifi and fantasy if possible)

like how to illustrate a view of an actual city (if you are able to, i'm sure it'd be a hassle to make). not sure if you ever do modern looking stuff, but i figure i'll ask.

for a top-down view there are loads of tutorials on www.cartographersguild.com. if you mean a birds-eye view of a city, this mainly comes down to a lot (and I mean a whole lot) of work. Tricky part with these is perspective, it has to be very tight to make it look believable. I usually use google sketchup to plot the most important buildings in 3d, chose a nice perspective and then export the bitmap to use for reference in Photoshop. Using that, I draw/paint each house the same way as the little tutorials I did. maybe once I have some time :P I can give a try to make a tutorial about that... cheers
